GQ Men
For decades, around the world, it has been said of certain men, “He’s so GQ.” The magazine has become synonymous with style, but to “be GQ” is so much more than just being outwardly fashionable. It also means to be cultured, to have taste, to have panoramic interests, from politics, art, and literature to film, music, travel, and of course fashion. It’s about being a part of the cultural moment— actively engaging in the here and now with curiosity and an appetite for what’s new.
Mining the magazine’s extensive photographic archives, GQ Men captures the essence of what it means to “Look Sharp / Live Smart” —the magazine’s mantra—by showcasing the men who embody the GQ spirit: legends like Paul Newman and Robert Redford; legends in the making like George Clooney and Denzel Washington; the new guard of young, handsome hotshots, like Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling and Channing Tatum; musicians like Paul McCartney and Kanye West; political and socials leaders like Bill Clinton and President Obama, fashion designers like Thom Browne and Ralph Lauren; plus artists (Jeff Koons), athletes (LeBron James), and funnymen (Jimmy Fallon). GQ Men celebrates all the facets of the modern man—smart and stylish both inside and out.
Jim Nelson has been editor-in-chief of GQ since March 2003. During his tenure, Mr. Nelson has worked as both a writer and an editor; his writing for the magazine was cited in The Best American Sports Writing 2001.
From 1994 to 1997, Mr. Nelson was an editor at Harper’s, where he was responsible for the magazine’s Readings section. His work has also appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Gourmet, and Food & Wine. Prior to his magazine career, Mr. Nelson worked as a writer and producer for CNN in Washington, D.C., and as a writer’s assistant on various sitcoms in Hollywood.
